Gigya, which is headquartered in Mountain View but started life in Israel, offers companies a platform to manage their customers’ details. The platform, which has about 1.3B customer identities, collects usage data, but also records customers’ opt-in and consent settings. These go into the firm’s registration-as-a-service, which manages compliance requirements, including the incoming General Data Protection Regulation.
It’s this capability that’s likely to be the driver for SAP’s acquisition, which Haaretz reported was for $350m, as it allows the German biz to quickly position itself in the growing GDPR software market. SAP will also get access to Gigya’s 700 or so customers, which include big brands like Asos, Bose and Forbes.

Over a year after Google showed off its “connected” jean jacket designed for bike commuters at last year’s Google I/O developer conference, the company unveiled the final product yesterday, which goes on sale on Wednesday for $350. Designed in partnership with Levi’s, the new smart jacket takes advantage of technology from Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP), which involves weaving multi-touch sensors into clothing.
At Google I/O, the companies demonstrated how a bike commuter could instead touch their jacket’s cuff and use gestures to control various functions that they would otherwise have needed to pull out their phone for – like handling calls and messages, adjusting the volume, or navigating with Google Maps, for instance.
In an attempt to woo new and younger viewers, Major League Baseball is building AR into its live statistics application, which will overlay three-dimensional graphics on top of real-life views. Its plan is to launch AR into its popular “At Bat” app by 2018.
Using Apple’s ARKit augmented reality platform, the new app will allow ballpark attendees to point their iPhone and iPad at the field and get real-time information about the players, their statistics, and other relevant numbers. By clicking on a player’s augmented image, you can get his data from Statcast. The Statcast tool uses HD cameras, a Doppler radar, and machine learning to track every move on the field
To some in Thailand, stray dogs are a nuisance. They spread disease, harass people and generally get into trouble. But a new initiative hopes to combat that perception by turning the animals into a form of mobile surveillance on paws — by putting them in a “smart vest” with a hidden video camera.
To take advantage of the dogs’ keen instincts, developers working in conjunction with Phuket-based Soi Dog Foundation fitted the vests with cameras activated by aggressive barking that sends a live video stream to a mobile device (monitored by humans, of course).
